Travelling, immersing myself in new cultures, and trying new experiences is my biggest passion and over the years, I’ve learned plenty of budget travel tips to explore Malta and the wider world without breaking the bank.
No matter the trip; whether it’s exploring a new city, relaxing at a resort, hiking a mountain, running a marathon, or just passing through a country, accommodation is often the biggest expense. For me, finding the right place to stay and budgeting smartly are key so I can go on more adventures without breaking the bank.
I’ve slept on an inflatable mat on the floor for a week while hiking around Mont Blanc, and I’ve slept in an igloo in Finland, two very different extremes. Then there are the in-between experiences, like staying in a cheap guesthouse in Porto for just six hours because it was affordable. In my younger days, I stayed in hostels with questionable cleanliness and shared bathrooms with six others—all for the chance to visit new places and tick experiences off my bucket list.

But here’s the thing: I only recommend places I genuinely enjoyed. Would I suggest that Porto guesthouse to someone on a city vacation? Not really. Sure, it cost only EUR 54 for a private room with a bathroom, but it had no fan in the middle of August—sleeping was tough! Timing, season, and purpose all matter.
Similarly, hostels can be amazing for students or budget travelers, but maybe less appealing for someone in their 30s seeking comfort. On the flip side, I would absolutely recommend staying in an igloo in Finland, even for one night—it was magical watching snow fall in the Lapland sky. And for hiking adventures, sleeping on a simple inflatable mat under the stars can be an unforgettable experience and nearly free!
The takeaway? Accommodation doesn’t have to break the bank, and it can even be part of the adventure itself. I only share personal, positive experiences here so you know my recommendations come from firsthand adventures.
