Ghajn Tuffieha Beach Malta – Why It’s My Favourite
If I could spend every sunny afternoon in Malta the same way, it would be at Ghajn Tuffieha Beach Malta, a golden stretch of sand tucked away in the rural area of Mġarr in the north of the island. Widely considered one of Malta’s most beautiful beaches, this gem has even earned Blue Flag status, meaning its water quality, safety, services, and environmental management are all top-notch.
Ghajn Tuffieha Beach: A Natural Backdrop
What sets Ghajn Tuffieha Beach apart isn’t just the golden sand and turquoise water — it’s the raw, natural setting. Clay cliffs rise dramatically around the bay, giving it an untouched, secluded feel.
To reach the beach, you’ll descend about 180 steps from the car park. It sounds like a workout (and it is!), but this is also why Ghajn Tuffieha tends to feel less crowded than its busier neighbor, Golden Bay.
And don’t miss the famous swings overlooking the water; they’ve become one of the most Instagrammable spots in Malta, with panoramic views over the bay.
Three Beaches, One View
This stretch of coastline is home to three distinct bays, all visible from the same vantage point:
- Ghajn Tuffieha Beach – The most scenic, framed by dramatic clay slopes.
- Golden Bay – Larger and busier, popular with both locals and tourists.
- Gnejna Bay – Smaller and quieter, often a local spot.
From the Ghajn Tuffieha car park, you can take a short walk to Ghajn Tuffieha Tower. From here, the view sweeps across all three beaches, a panorama worth pausing for before you head down the steps to the sand.

Exploring Beyond Ghajn Tuffieha Beach
If you love a mix of hiking and beach time, Qarrabba Hill is right next door. Instead of descending the stairs, follow the trail straight ahead into the Majjistral Nature Park, one of Malta’s best hiking areas. Here, clay slopes tumble into the sea, making it a perfect spot for a short, scenic walk with unforgettable coastal views.

Sunsets at Ghajn Tuffieha Beach
While Ghajn Tuffieha Beach Malta is beautiful all day long, sunset is when it becomes truly magical. As the sun sinks into the Mediterranean in a blaze of colour, you can watch it from:
- The beach itself while enjoying a swim
- The historic Ghajn Tuffieha Tower
- The slopes of Qarrabba Hill
Wherever you choose, it’s a moment you won’t forget.

Singita Beach Bar – The Sunset Ritual
To make an evening of it, head to Singita Miracle Beach Bar. As the sun drops below the horizon, they host a Sunset Ritual, marked by the sound of a gong. Soft lighting, laid-back music, and a relaxed vibe make this a truly unique experience.
The drinks are excellent, the food is decent, but for a more memorable dinner, I recommend heading into Mġarr town afterwards. It’s the perfect place to try traditional Maltese food, and one of my favourite spots is Bottega Frawli, a charming wine bar and restaurant.

Practical Tips for Visiting Ghajn Tuffieha
Before heading to Ghajn Tuffieha Beach Malta, always check the weather conditions. If the wind is coming from the West or Northwest stronger than Force 3, the sea comes straight into the bay. This can stir up the seabed, bring in algae, and make swimming less pleasant.
That said, these same conditions make Ghajn Tuffieha the best spot in Malta for surfing, and it’s actually the only place on the island offering surfing lessons when the waves are right.
Final Thoughts
Ghajn Tuffieha Beach Malta is one of those rare places that has it all — natural beauty, space to relax, opportunities for hiking, and breathtaking sunsets. Whether you’re coming for a swim, a hike, or just to watch the sky turn gold at sunset, it’s a must-visit on any Malta itinerary.
