The Theth to Valbona hike from Tirana is one of the most breathtaking journeys in Albania’s Albanian Alps. Known as the country’s most famous hiking trail, it combines rugged mountain paths, traditional guesthouses, and stunning alpine landscapes.

Planning it, though, gave me a bit of a headache. Distances are long: it’s roughly a 4-plus hour trip from Tirana to Theth, then the hike, then a land transfer from Valbona to Fierze, and finally the Komani ferry back to Koman and a land transfer toward Shkoder or Tirana. I only fully understood the route after a lot of research and piecing the logistics together!

When we did the hike, we actually drove there ourselves, and you can read the full blog on how to complete the trip by car. However, I highly recommend choosing organised transport instead; it’s a far more hassle-free experience and lets you focus on enjoying the trail rather than worrying about logistics.

This guide walks you step-by-step from Tirana to Shkoder and onward to Valbona and back, with links so you can book each leg directly; dive into the sections below for full details.

Step-by-Step Summary: Theth to Valbona from Tirana

More details on each step are provided below.

This 3-day tour is ideal if you want transfers and accommodation in Theth and Valbona pre-arranged for a stress-free experience.

How to Get from Tirana to Shkoder/ Theth

The journey from Tirana to the Albanian Alps usually starts with a bus or minivan to Shkoder, about 1 hour 45 minutes away. Shkoder is a popular gateway to Theth, but during peak season (starting in April), Candy Tours offer direct transfers from Tirana to Theth, bypassing the need to stay overnight in Shkoder unless you choose to.

Direct transfers to Theth cost approximately €25 and can be booked online in advance, offering a hassle-free start to your adventure.

Overnight in Shkoder

If you prefer a relaxed pace or miss the direct transfer, spending a night in Shkoder is worthwhile. The city is charming, with historic streets, the Rozafa Castle, and Shkoder Lake. Staying overnight also lets you start fresh the next morning for the mountain transfer to Theth.

Transfer from Shkoder to Theth

From Shkoder, organised minivans take about 2.5 hours to reach Theth along scenic but winding mountain roads. This leg is where the adventure truly begins, taking you deep into the Albanian Alps.

Theth to Valbona Hike

The Theth to Valbona hike is approximately 15 km and typically takes 6–8 hours, depending on your pace. The trail winds through lush forests, alpine meadows, and high mountain passes, offering some of the most breathtaking views in the Albanian Alps.

Light backpacks are recommended, and guesthouses in both Theth and Valbona provide comfortable accommodation and hearty meals along the route.

During our stay, we stayed at a lovely guesthouse in Theth, which made the experience even more enjoyable. You can read all about our stay and the full hike statistics here.

Valbona to Shkoder

After completing the hike, you can continue your journey from Valbona to Shkoder with ease. During peak season, some companies offer a combined transfer and Komani Lake ferry package, taking care of both the road journey to Fierze and the scenic ferry ride across the lake in one seamless trip. This is the most hassle-free way to return to Shkoder, as it avoids the need to coordinate separate transport and ferry tickets. This leg costs €35 per person.

The transfer usually takes about 1–1.5 hours to Fierze, followed by the 2.5-hour ferry across Komani Lake, arriving in Shkoder ready to relax or continue your journey back to Tirana. Tickets can be booked in advance, ensuring a smooth, organized experience without the stress of coordinating each leg individually.

Shkoder to Tirana

Returning from Shkoder to Tirana is straightforward, and the easiest way is to book through Candy Tours, which offers regular departures and reliable service. The journey takes around 2–3 hours, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the scenic drive back to the capital.

Final Thoughts

I would 100% recommend doing the Theth to Valbona hike from Tirana. I’d even go back just to hike this section again as part of the full Peaks of the Balkans trail. I absolutely loved the scenery, the tiny mountain villages, and that feeling of being completely surrounded by nature.

That said, I can’t pretend the logistics were fun. Driving there ourselves was more stressful than it was worth. The two-hour ride from Shkoder to Theth on a narrow mountain road was… let’s say… memorable. We got a puncture that cost €50 to fix (thankfully there was a tire shop open in Theth!) and, worst of all, we missed the Komani Lake ferry — the part I’d been looking forward to most.

If I could do it again, I’d skip the car and take organised transport. It’s less hassle and lets you just enjoy what this hike is really about: breathtaking views, kind locals, and that perfect mix of adventure and peace you find in the Albanian Alps.

If you’re looking to relax after the Albanian Alps, don’t miss a visit to the southern coast. Himara is truly the gem of Albania’s south coast. Think turquoise waters, hidden caves, and boat tours that take you to secluded beaches. Check out my full blog post on Himara and the best boat tour along the Albanian Riviera.
