Travel doesn’t have to break the bank. For years, there’s been a myth that seeing the world is only for those with deep pockets but I’m here to tell you it’s not true. Expensive travel is a choice, not a rule. It all comes down to how much you want it and how patient and strategic you are.
I started traveling in my early twenties, right after I landed my first full-time job. I remember booking Ryanair flights for as little as €15 return—yes, really. These days, prices aren’t that low, but you can still find tickets for €30–€50 if you know where to look. After over a decade of hunting for deals, I’ve picked up some tricks and hacks along the way.
One of the most useful tools today is AI. Apps like AirHint combine historical flight data with AI predictions to estimate whether prices are likely to rise or fall. Combine that with a little flexibility, and you can snag great deals even in Europe.
Timing is Everything
Being flexible with your travel dates can save you a ton. Shoulder seasons are perfect: the weather is often just as lovely, but prices are lower. I love traveling in late May / early June—it’s the start of peak season, so the vibes are high, but the costs haven’t skyrocketed yet. Similarly, low-season travel can be a lifesaver in cities like Rome, Florence, or Madrid, to name a few. Visiting in January or February can mean staying right next to iconic landmarks for half the price you’d pay in summer.
Accommodation Hacks
I’m not really the hostel type these days, I love having my own space, but back when I was younger, hostels were a fun, cheap way to meet new people. Now, all I want is a safe, clean spot that’s central and easy to get around from.
I also believe in balancing splurges with savings. If I’m visiting a unique place like Lapland in Finland, staying in a glass igloo—even for one night—is worth it. On the other hand, in Santorini, I planned my trip for May instead of June–September. The weather was perfect, the crowds were smaller, and prices were significantly lower.
Eat Well Without Overspending
Eating well doesn’t have to be expensive either. Avoid restaurants in main squares, steer clear of menus in multiple languages, and you’ll find much better value (and flavor). These tourist traps will drain your wallet fast.
Explore the Underrated
Why fight the crowds in Rome in July when the Balkans offer stunning scenery, fewer tourists, and better prices? Often, choosing underrated destinations is the easiest way to travel more for less.
Let Me Deinfluence You
Social media often makes us feel like we need to stay in 5-star hotels, dine at the most expensive restaurants, and live a lifestyle that doesn’t match our budget. But here’s the thing: if you shift your mindset to that of a traveller rather than a tourist, you realize that seeing the world matters far more than staying in a flashy hotel, unless, of course, your budget comfortably allows it.
I would never go into debt just to stay somewhere I can’t afford. If a location offers a unique or special stay, I might splurge for just one night if that’s what my budget allows. The same goes for restaurants: I choose spots that are within my range. When I travel, I prefer to eat local. Not only is it usually more affordable, it’s also authentic.
To me, travel isn’t about showing off; it’s about learning. It’s about experiencing new cultures, seeing how people live, connecting with them, tasting their food, and observing their daily lives. That’s what makes a trip meaningful and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
Mindset Matters
Ultimately, traveling affordably is about knowing your options and prioritizing what matters to you. Whether it’s hunting for flight deals, timing your visit, balancing splurges with budget stays, or avoiding tourist traps, there are ways to see the world without emptying your bank account. Expensive travel is a choice. But so is making travel accessible, exciting, and sustainable for your wallet and trust me, it’s completely possible!
Having an adventurous mindset takes you places too: being open to new experiences, flexible with plans, and willing to try unconventional options can turn even a modest budget into unforgettable adventures.
