Sleep in the City: Amsterdam Edition

Discover where to stay in Amsterdam on a budget. My experience in De Pijp: affordable hotels, local charm, and easy access to the city’s top attractions.

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most visited cities, attracting millions of tourists, business travellers, and students every year. Famous for its canals, historic charm, and vibrant culture, it’s no surprise that Amsterdam is a top destination. But there’s one thing you’ll notice quickly; accommodation in Amsterdam is expensive. With limited space for new construction and huge demand, hotel prices are sky high!

If you’re not keen on hostels (which are often just as pricey), your best option is to look beyond the immediate city center. Areas like De Pijp, Amsterdam Noord, and Amsterdam West are great choices. They’re still well-connected by public transport but offer better value for money when it comes to hotels and guesthouses.

During my latest trip in May 2024, I chose to stay in De Pijp, and it turned out to be a fantastic decision. This neighborhood is known for its lively cultural scene, cozy cafés, and attractions like the Rijksmuseum and the bustling Albert Cuyp Market.

Best of all, it was just a short 20-minute walk to Dam Square (or two metro stops away). The hotel I stayed in was simple but had everything I needed; a comfortable bed, a private bathroom, and a great location at a much lower price than city-center options.

One thing to note: like many buildings in Amsterdam, there are stairs to climb (the houses here are famously tall and narrow), but that’s part of the city’s charm.

✨ I stayed at Hotel de Munck and I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for affordable accommodation in Amsterdam.

If you’re planning a trip and wondering where to stay in Amsterdam on a budget, I highly recommend De Pijp. It’s local, lively, and budget-friendly, without sacrificing convenience.
