Nestled along the rugged coastline of Italy’s Liguria region, between Genoa and Pisa, the Cinque Terre travel guide introduces five breathtaking villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. These cliffside towns, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, are famed for dramatic landscapes, colourful buildings, crystal-clear waters, and charming narrow streets.
Whether hiking through vineyards, savouring fresh seafood, or soaking in the views, Cinque Terre offers a rare glimpse of Italy’s coastal beauty at its finest.
The Five Villages of Cinque Terre
Riomaggiore – The southernmost village, with steep streets, vibrant buildings, and the scenic Via dell’Amore connecting it to Manarola.
Manarola – Famous for its sunsets and vineyards, this tiny village offers picturesque harbour views and a relaxing stroll through colourful streets.
Corniglia – Perched 100m above the sea, Corniglia provides panoramic Mediterranean views. Access via the Lardarina staircase (382 steps) or a shuttle from the train station. Its peaceful, terraced vineyards make it perfect for a serene escape.
Vernazza – Often called the most picturesque village, Vernazza features a lively harbour, medieval castle, and vibrant streets. Its charm makes it a favourite among travellers.
Monterosso al Mare – The largest village, known for its long sandy beach, historic streets, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s split into the old town and the newer beachside area, offering both cultural and leisure experiences.
