Travelling from Kraków to Zakopane is incredibly straightforward, and whether you’re visiting for the mountains, the food, or the cosy highland atmosphere, there are several great ways to make the journey. Below I’ve grouped them by what I think works best for most travellers, starting with the train, which has quickly become my personal favourite.
1. By Train – The Most Comfortable Option
If you want a smooth, spacious, and genuinely pleasant journey, the train is hard to beat. Poland’s rail system has improved massively in recent years, and the trains running between Kraków and Zakopane are modern, clean, quiet, and offer far more comfort than buses. Think wide seats, plenty of legroom, big windows, and the ability to move around easily.
It’s honestly my preferred way to travel between the two destinations. The trains feel premium but are still very affordable, often the same price as a bus ticket, so you’re getting excellent value for money without sacrificing comfort.
Why choose the train?
- No traffic delays
- Very comfortable, spacious, and quiet
- Power sockets, tables, toilets, and space for luggage
- Scenic approach into the mountains
- Still extremely cheap compared to many other European countries
Trains leave from Kraków Główny and arrive at Zakopane Railway Station, just a short walk from the town centre.
⚠️ Journey times vary
This is the only thing to watch out for. Some trains take around 2 hours, while others can stretch to 3+ hours. I always recommend checking the timetable and choosing the faster 2-hour connections, which make the journey smooth, quick, and enjoyable.

2. By Bus – Cheap, Direct, and Frequent (But Slower in High Season)
The bus is the most budget-friendly and straightforward option for many travellers. Buses run frequently, and take you directly from Kraków MDA Bus Station to the center of Zakopane.
Why choose the bus?
- Cheap
- Direct, no changes
- Frequent departures
- No need to book far in advance
The journey is typically listed as 2 hours, but this can change dramatically depending on traffic.
⚠️ Expect delays during busy periods
The Kraków–Zakopane road is famous for congestion during ski season and holiday periods. From personal experience, it took us close to 3 hours in February, even during the week. Weekends and peak season can be even slower, especially when approaching Zakopane.
3. Guided Day Trips – Ideal if You’re Short on Time
If you’re staying in Kraków but want to experience Zakopane without organising transport yourself, a guided tour can be a great choice. These tours usually include:
- Round-trip transport
- Free time on Krupówki Street
- A ride up Gubałówka Hill
- Optional stops at thermal baths, viewpoints, or local cheese huts
It’s the most convenient way to see Zakopane if you only have one day and don’t want to worry about logistics.
Other Ways to Travel
The sections above cover all shared transfer options from Kraków to Zakopane; meaning you share the ride with other passengers, whether it’s a train, bus, or group tour.
Of course, you can also travel by:
- Private transfer – the most convenient door-to-door option
- Car hire – great if you’re a road trip enthusiast or want to explore nearby places like Chochołów, Kościelisko, or the thermal baths
These options are more expensive but give you complete flexibility.
Whichever you choose, the route from Kraków to Zakopane is straightforward, and the mountain town is absolutely worth the journey. With its wooden villas, hearty food, and Tatra trails, Zakopane offers a contrast to the historic charm of Kraków.
