Madeira is a paradise for hikers, and its official PR trails, or Percursos Pedestres Classificados, are some of the best ways to explore the island’s breathtaking landscapes. Well-marked, maintained, and full of character, each trail offers a unique way to discover Madeira, from dramatic mountain ridges and lush levadas to coastal cliffs and peaceful viewpoints.

In August 2024, we spent 10 unforgettable days exploring Madeira on foot. Of all the PR trails we hiked, PR1, PR6, PR8, and PR11 stood out as our favourites. Below, I’ll share why each trail is special, including difficulty, distance, highlights, and practical tips to make the most of your hikes.

Since January 2025, Madeira has introduced a small access fee of €3 per person for most (not required for PR11)official PR hiking trails to help with maintenance and conservation. The payment can be made online in advance via the SIMplifica website.

⚠️Recently, the SIMplifica website requires you to reserve your spot in advance. You’ll select the PR trail you want to do, choose the date and time, and enter the number of participants. After clicking Request, you’ll be asked for your email address, and an invoice will be issued to pay the €3 fee.

PR1 – Vereda do Arieiro (Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo / Achada do Teixeira)

This is arguably Madeira’s most iconic hike, linking two of its highest peaks, Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m) and Pico Ruivo (1,862 m) and featuring dramatic ridgelines, tunnels, and breathtaking mountain scenery.

⚠️ Only the first 1.2 km of the trail are currently accessible.

PR6 – Levada das 25 Fontes & Levada do Risco

Located in Rabaçal, this dual hike takes you through lush landscapes to discover cascading waterfalls and blooming forest.

PR8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço

This trail offers a dramatic contrast to the island’s green interior. The trail setting is rugged, and coastal with sun-drenched volcanic rock views. After a beautiful walk, you can take a dip in the crystal clear water of Cais de Sardinha, a beach located right at the end of the trail.
