One of the highlights of my spring trip to the Netherlands was taking a Keukenhof day trip from Amsterdam, and I’m happy to report that getting there was incredibly easy. If you’re staying in the city and wondering whether Keukenhof is worth the effort, it 100% is and the logistics couldn’t be simpler.
I visited at the beginning of May, and it felt like the perfect way to escape the city for a few hours and step straight into a sea of colour.

Keukenhof Spring Garden: A Bloom-Filled Dream in the Netherlands
Every spring, a quiet corner of the Netherlands bursts into one of the most breathtaking floral spectacles in the world. Keukenhof, often called “The Garden of Europe,” is a dazzling celebration of colour and artistry that draws visitors from around the globe.
If you’ve ever dreamed of wandering through endless tulip displays or strolling along flower-lined paths, Keukenhof Spring Garden is the place where those dreams bloom into reality.
A Brief Look at Keukenhof’s Magic
Located in Lisse, Keukenhof opens for just eight weeks each year, typically from late March through mid-May. In 2026, the garden is scheduled to welcome visitors from Thursday, 19 March until Sunday, 10 May. During this short season, more than seven million flower bulbs burst into bloom, transforming the park into a living masterpiece.
Tulips are the stars of the show, but they’re joined by a stunning mix of daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, lilies, orchids, and many other spring flowers.
What Makes Keukenhof So Special?
World-Class Flower Displays
Each garden bed is carefully planned months in advance, blending creativity with horticultural precision. Whether you prefer classic tulip fields or modern floral designs, every corner brings a new wow moment.
Themed Pavilions
Keukenhof features several indoor pavilions with rotating exhibitions. The Willem-Alexander Pavilion showcases thousands of tulips, while the Beatrix Pavilion is filled with orchids and anthuriums.
Perfect Photo Opportunities
From traditional windmills and canals to sweeping carpets of flowers, Keukenhof is a photographer’s dream. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light and a calmer atmosphere.
Relaxing Paths & Waterways
Beyond the flower beds, wooded trails, bridges, and gentle streams create a peaceful environment ideal for wandering. A boat ride around the tulip fields offer a different and memorable perspective.
How I Got to Keukenhof from Amsterdam
I didn’t rent a car or figure out public transport on my own. Instead, I booked a Keukenhof ticket that included round-trip shuttle transfers from Amsterdam city center, and I’d recommend this option to anyone.
The shuttle departed from a central location in Amsterdam, which was easy to reach. After checking in, I boarded the bus, and about 45 minutes later we were dropped right at the entrance of Keukenhof; no transfers, no stress, and no confusion.
When I was finished exploring, I simply hopped back on the shuttle and returned to the city center. Easy and seamless.
Depending on the date you choose, tickets are priced at €35 or €39.40.
Visiting Keukenhof in Early May
By early May, Keukenhof was still bursting with colour. While some early tulips had already peaked, there were still endless varieties in bloom, along with hyacinths, daffodils, and later-season flowers. The gardens felt vibrant, fresh, and very much alive.
Walking through Keukenhof felt like strolling through a perfectly curated spring dream. Every path revealed a new colour palette, and every turn offered another photo opportunity.
What It Was Like Inside the Gardens
Keukenhof is huge. I wandered at my own pace, stopping often to take photos, sit by the water, or simply enjoy the scenery. Highlights for me included:
- Sweeping tulip displays in every imaginable colour
- Peaceful canals and bridges
- Indoor pavilions with beautifully arranged blooms
- The classic Dutch windmill overlooking the fields
Tips for Visiting Keukenhof
1. Come Early or Late in the Day
Arriving at opening time or during the last two hours helps avoid the busiest crowds.
2. Visit Mid-April if Possible
Bloom times vary, but mid-April usually offers the most vibrant colours.
3. Buy Tickets Online
Tickets sell out quickly, especially on weekends and holidays.
4. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Keukenhof covers 32 hectares, so expect plenty of walking.
Why Keukenhof Is the Perfect Amsterdam Day Trip
What surprised me most was just how effortless the experience was. I left Amsterdam in the morning, spent a few magical hours surrounded by flowers, and was back in the city by the afternoon.
