How to Get to Monte Palace from Funchal
Because the garden sits on a hillside, the journey up becomes part of the experience.
Madeira Cable Car (Teleférico do Funchal)
The most scenic way to reach Monte, the cable car departs from central Funchal near the waterfront and glides up to the Monte/Babosas area in about 15 minutes. Along the way, you’re treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the city, coastline, and surrounding hills.
More details here.
Public Bus
Buses 20, 21, 22 and 48 run from central Funchal to the Monte area, dropping you within walking distance of the garden.
Taxi / Car / Ride-Share
If you prefer full flexibility, taxis and ride-share apps work well. Bolt operates in Madeira and is reliable for quick point-to-point trips. That said, renting a car truly opens up the island, especially if you want to explore remote viewpoints or tackle some of Madeira’s iconic PR hiking trails at your own pace.
During our trip, we chose to drive so we could reach trailheads early, avoid crowds and discover lesser-known spots along the way. If you’re thinking about hiring a car too, I highly recommend Centauro, we’ve always had an excellent experience, and I share all the reasons why it’s my favourite car rental company here.
Not a fan of driving? No problem. If you’re into hiking or travelling solo, I’ve got you covered:
check out my favourite PR trails, where I’ve also linked shared transfers you can book directly to the trailheads and back. It’s a fantastic alternative if you want the adventure without the stress of navigating the roads.
Wicker-Basket Toboggan (Carros de Cesto)
For a quintessential Madeiran experience, take the cable car up and then ride the traditional wicker toboggan down the old Monte streets. This is separate from the garden entrance, but many visitors combine the two.
The famous wicker-basket toboggans depart right in front of Monte Church, just a short stroll from Monte Palace Tropical Garden. In around 10 minutes, they whisk you down the 2 km route to the Livramento neighborhood. From there, you can either walk back to Funchal or catch a bus or taxi. The Monte Toboggan Ride is one of those quirky, can’t-find-it-anywhere-else experiences. These sleds can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h, adding a thrilling edge to the ride!

Highlights of the Garden
Monte Palace Tropical Garden was even more breathtaking than I expected, and I hope these photos give you a little glimpse of its tropical charm and stunning views.
Tropical Plants and Exotic Flora
Walk among palms, ferns, cycads and rare species from around the world — a botanical showcase that feels both wild and meticulously cared for.

Lakes, Water Features & Animals
Koi-filled ponds, streams, ducks, swans and reflective water surfaces contribute to the garden’s peaceful atmosphere.

Art, Tiles & Sculptures
Historic azulejo panels line pathways, while sculptures and cultural artefacts from different parts of the world give the garden a unique visual rhythm.

Panoramic Views Over Funchal
Because of its elevation, Monte Palace offers stunning views of Funchal’s rooftops, the harbour and the Atlantic horizon.
The view below is from the Bluehouse café, where you can enjoy a drink or snack on its spacious outdoor terrace.

Tips for Visiting Monte Palace Tropical Garden
- Wear comfortable shoes — I quickly realised how much walking the garden involves! The garden is huge, with a mix of gentle paths, winding slopes, and steps, so you’ll be doing plenty of walking.
- Allow 2–3 hours — A relaxed visit takes a couple of hours if you want to wander, take photos, and enjoy the gardens. You could easily make a full day out of it by pairing the garden with a ride up on the cable car, a visit to the Nossa Senhora do Monte Church, and a thrilling ride down the wicker toboggan.
- Arrive early — The light is perfect for photos, the gardens feel peaceful, and you can truly soak in the atmosphere before the crowds arrive.
- Take a break at one of the cafés — There are several cafés inside the garden serving sandwiches, cakes, salads, and wraps, all with lovely views over the gardens and Funchal Bay. If you’re on a budget, bringing your own water and snacks works perfectly too.

Is Monte Palace Tropical Garden Madeira Worth It?
Without a doubt! Whether you’re a plant lover, photographer, or simply someone who enjoys beautiful places, it’s one of Madeira’s standout experiences.
Every time I visit such breathtaking spots, I’m reminded of how small we are in the grand scheme of things and how perfect the world can feel. Places like Monte Palace make me feel incredibly grateful to live in such a beautiful world and to have the privilege of experiencing it, it’s something I will never take for granted!
